Toyota isn't exactly well known for making sexy motors. Green cars, yes. Nice little city runarounds, yes. But über-hot cars that make your heart pound? That's a definite no! Well, this may all be set to change with the introduction of the FT-86 concept car at this month's Toyko Motor Show – a car that looks like it could give Nissan's GT-R and 370Z coupé a run for their money.
Down at Toyota HQ, the clever designers – who’ve brought us the likes of the iQ and the new Prius – have been developing a vehicle that ticks all of the right sports car boxes – the result being the slicker-than-slick FT-86.
When designing the sports car, Toyota’s designers are claimed to have taken into consideration all that a classic sports car should be, so FT-86 comes with features such as a low centre of gravity, lightweight construction and compact dimensions.
Under the five-seater's hood there’s a 2.0-litre boxer engine that’s claimed to be "strong on both performance and environmental quality" – though cheeky Toyota hasn't given us any performance stats so we can’t make up our own minds about whether it really delivers on both fronts.
